Lorca Town, South West Murcia

Few Spanish towns can boast a landmark as impressive as the 13th-century castle located in Lorca, South West Murcia, which juts out above the market town offering views for miles around. It’s called La Fortaleza del Sol, and although damaged in the 2011 earthquake that struck Lorca and left nine people dead, the castle is still a definite must-see. Visitors are treated to actors recreating scenes from the castle’s rich past, hands-on gadgets for the younger visitors, and of course those wonderful views that span this ancient town to the sea and countryside beyond.

Lastly, make sure you check out the selection of small-sized museums that house the exquisite Semana Santa costumes. You’ll find the museums dotted around the town, but the main two to check out are the Museo de Bordados del Paso Azul, and the Museo Bordados del Paso Blanco. The costumes on display are wonderfully intricate and feature hand-embroidered silk designs that depict both religious and historical scenes from Lorca’s past.
